Tailstock for metal lathe
Tailstocks for metal lathe : an essential tool for precision
Tailstocks play a crucial role in turning operations, especially when it comes to holding a long or delicate workpiece. These accessories are essential to ensure stability, precision and safety when working on a lathe. Available in different sizes and types, they adapt to various needs, in particular thanks to the MK1, MK2 and MK3 standards, as well as variants such as live tailstocks.
Role and operation of tailstocks
A tailstock is installed on the tailstock of the lathe and supports the free end of the workpiece. This configuration prevents bending or vibrations of the workpiece, which could affect precision or damage the cutting tool. In turning, tailstocks are particularly useful for machining long workpieces or performing operations requiring high precision, such as cylindrical or conical turning.
The different sizes: MK1, MK2 and MK3
The names MK1, MK2 and MK3 refer to the Morse tapers, which standardize the dimensions of the tailstocks. These sizes allow you to choose the tailstock adapted to the machine and the workpiece:
- MK1 : Suitable for small machines or small diameter parts.
- MK2 : Intermediate size, frequently used on standard lathes for medium-sized parts.
- MK3 : Ideal for heavier work or parts requiring increased stability, on more robust machines.
The rotating tailstock
Unlike the fixed tailstock, the rotating tailstock has a bearing that allows it to rotate with the workpiece. This mechanism considerably reduces friction and heat, thus improving precision and minimizing wear on the accessory. It is ideal for fast turning operations or sensitive materials.
Conclusion
Choosing the right tailstock, whether fixed or rotating, and adapted to the standard of your machine, is essential to ensure precise and safe work. This accessory, often underestimated, is nevertheless an essential ally in any turning workshop.
