The mortising bit is mounted on mortisers at the end of the shaft of a jointer planer. Its direction of rotation therefore depends on that of the machine.

To avoid any operating errors, always look at the direction of rotation of the jointer's mandrel from behind, especially not from the front! If the chuck rotates to the left, then it requires a left-rotating mortise bit and vice versa.

There are 2 types of mortising bits: basic with chip breaker or helical for better chip evacuation.
